Border Collie

Topping the list as no surprise is the Border Collie, extremely intelligent dogs capable of complex training. Which is why they are often associated with sheep herding. If not for work they make a great family pet, they are very active so get those walking shoes out! 

German Shepherd

There’s a reason the Police use them… The German Shepherd are Smart, Agile and strong with a confident personality to match. Couple that with their undying loyalty it’s easy to see why they are a favourite.

Poodle

The Poodle breed are instantly recognisable with their unique hair (not fur) but their intelligence is something else that sets them apart along with their characteristics of being energetic and a sociable breed they are highly trainingable. Available in several varieties; standard Poodle, Medium Poodle, Miniature Poodle and Toy Poodle.

Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is a muscular dog famous for its golden coat. Despite the sometimes silly face and fun nature, Golden Retrievers are very intelligent dogs. Like the name suggests, they are “Retrievers” and are exceptionally easy to train, loyal and have the ability to pick up on human emotions.

Doberman pinscher

A distinctive looking dog with a sleek coat and pitched up ears. Big, strong, brave and powerful traditionally used as a protection dog. However theres more to a Doberman than that… They are extremely smart and able to detect and gauge friend from foe more accurately than any other dog. I know which dog I would want next to my bed if I heard strange sounds outside.

Shetland Sheepdog

The Shetland Sheepdog, also referred to as a ‘Sheltie’ is one of the most beautiful dogs on this list. Instantly standing out with its unique long coat. A relative to the Collie family, the Sheltie is extremely intelligent, quick to learn and obedient. Great with Family, other dogs and young children.

Labrador Retriever

One of the world’s most popular dog breeds, kind natured, affectionate, intelligent and as cute as they come. Labradors are enthusiastic learners and can easily be taught with treats. Don’t forget to get out and exercise as their love for food can sometimes result in them being spoilt and unfit.

Papillon

The only small dog amongst this list, the Papillon is an extremely friendly, alert and fun dog to have as a companion. Identifiable with their long silky coat and unique wing shaped ears. Despite its small stature they are very athletic and can happily bounce around all day. 

Rottweiler

Often misconceived as a mean aggressive dog, Rottweilers are extremely intelligent and in the right environment will thrive. If taught correctly they are actually calm and confident dogs, but still courageous and protective if a threat reveals itself.

Australian Cattle Dog 

Compact, muscular and brains to match, the Australian Cattle Dog is a highly trainable dog for all environments. Related to its Australian counterpart the Dingo, these dogs have bought their natural strength and instincts from the wild into everyday life. These dogs are highly intelligent they require to be challenged or else they will become bored and as a result mischievous.
